Page 12 (asylum)

1 After a few months, she had alienated everyone.  Some of the other girls even made up stories about her.
1 Patient: “She’s such a freak.”
1 Patient: “I know.  People say animals die when they even get near her, and that’s why the asylum won’t get a dog for us.”
2 Patient: “No way.  That can’t happen, right?”
2 Patient: “I heard yesterday a bird dropped out of the sky dead as she was walking past!”
2 Patient: “Did anybody actually see that?”
3 Patient: “Well, I heard Kitty saw her poking at it.  She didn’t say she saw it fall.”
3 Patient: “Cuddlebug saw her mangling it, too – she’s the one who told me.  And it must have happened, or it wouldn’t be on the ground.”
4 Dr. Wilkes: “What is the complaint this time?”
4 Nurse: “Could be nothing, but it sounded serious enough to let you know.  And we wanted you to hear it from Lucy’s own mouth, so you can make your own opinion.”
5 Patient: “She’s into witchcraft.  Cuddlebug… uh, I mean, Natalie even saw her ripping apart a dead bird yesterday!  She was using its blood and muttering her magic spells.  Janie and I are afraid she’s going to put curses on us so we never get better.”
5 Dr. Wilkes: “Hmm.”  
6 Dr. Wilkes: “Could it be true?  Not the silly fear of charms part the other patients have, but the occultism?  I don’t want that sort of thing spreading.”
6 Nurse: “Normally I wouldn’t believe it… but, well, Miller does call herself ‘Diabolique’.  It might mean something.”
